It is officially my hubby’s favorite time of year. Yes, he’s a sports nut, and will watch just about any sport on television (and that includes golf), but baseball has always been his favorite. Growing up, I was never a big baseball fan. Here in Nebraska where we don’t have any professional sports teams besides our Husker Football (and yes, we do consider that a professional sport), you really have a wide variety of teams to root for if you’re so inclined. People follow the Royals, the Cubs, the Rockies, and even the Twins. My Grandpa Luethje was a lifelong Cubs fan, so I probably watched more Chicago Cubs baseball than any other team, and they will always hold a special place in my heart.

It wasn’t until I moved to New York that I got my first real look at some crazy baseball fans. Right away, the Yankees were a turn off for me. They are like that kid in your high school class who hits puberty before everyone else and is suddenly the best at every sport and knows it. Just a bit too much ego for my taste. Luckily, I am close friends with some really sweet Yankee fans who keep me from hating the team (and Foerth is definitely not on that list of sweet Yankee fans).

The Mets, on the other hand, are a team that you just can’t help cheering for because somehow, they just can’t ever seem to get it together. If the Yankees are the kid in high school who hit puberty first, the Mets are his younger brother–the kid who plays in the band, makes second string in all the sports, and who doesn’t hit puberty until after college. The Mets have talent, a whole lot of heart, and some of the best (and funniest) announcers sitting in the booth. One of these days, everything is going to click and they are going to start tearing it up. You just have to hang on for the ride.

Today’s 365 Project entry is dedicated to my husband and his favorite New York Mets. Let’s see what the season will bring.
