365 Project – Day 242 – The Ugly Bug Ball

I’m not going to hide it. I have a serious addiction to the old, live-action Disney movies–films like The Parent Trap (and I’m talking the original Hayley Mills version, not that bullshit Lindsey Lohan garbage they called a remake), Babes in Toyland (again, the original with Annette Funicello is the only version worth watching), The Watcher in the WoodsCandleshoe, and Darby O’Gill and the Little People. Sure, these old movies are kinda cheesy and rather tame compared to the gratutious sex and violence we are used to in movies these days, but they are movies that I can watch over and over again and never get tired of them.

The list of great old Disney live-action movies is so long that it’s difficult to choose a favorite, but the one I always keep coming back to is Summer Magic. I always loved Hayley Mills. Cute girl. Funny accent. What’s not to love? Plus, I always dreamed of moving into some big old farmhouse with lots of character and fixing it up just the way I wanted. Add a little comedy and a little romance to the mix and you’ve got yourself a great movie in my book.

But my favorite part of the film, by far, was when Burl Ives’ character Osh Popham sings The Ugly Bug Ball song. For those of you who have absolutely no idea what I’m talking about, here is a copy of the clip for your viewing pleasure…

Yeah, you can thank me three weeks from now when you still have that song stuck in your head.

Today’s 365 Project entry is dedicated to those movies (and songs) we love without reason. And a special thanks to this little guy for reminding me of Summer Magic today. I think it’s time to dig it out of the DVD box and watch it with Cadence.
